Look, Remember, Celebrate

slice-of-life_individual

I love this tree like plant that, despite periodic neglect, continues to grow.  Always reaching towards the light.  I know it needs attention when I see the bottom leaves start to fall off.  Sometimes, I catch the need for water before the leaves fall.  If this happens, I get to pluck the dry, ready to fall. leaves off.  I like plucking leaves.  It’s somehow satisfying.

This tree like plant wasn’t always tree like.  It entered my life when Grampa Hiza passed away 16 years ago. No one wanted it, so I took it.  When it first became part of our home. I captured it in my journal and wrote.  This page and the plant makes me smile and clap my hands just like Grampa Hiza did.

  1. I love that you have the journal entry — like a welcome note to the plant and a memory card for your grandfather — next to the thriving tree/plant. Great visual. It’s a story all of its own.

  2. You are famous!!! So glad to know you. I’ll have to get your autograph tomorrow. This slice reminds me of my Grandma’s rocking chair that no one wanted. These items that become treasures. I love that yours continues to grow and show you what it needs.

  3. ❤️. I love how you go back into your journal for inspiration for your slices and that in your journal you use different materials. These are 2 things I need to do. I’m also impressed that you kept it alive for so long. It’s such a great memory and reminder of family each day I bet.

  4. I have a connection and a wonder. I too, love plucking leaves and deadheading Petunias. I wonder if this is like what you were saying about your writing yesterday at recess, when you said you like to trim.

  5. Ohh! I do love to deadhead Petunias, too! Yeah, I guess there is an analogy between a growing plant that needs deadheading and writing. I’m not a graphic organizer kinda writer, I tend to throw it all on the page, reread, trim (It was Andrew Glenn, a former third grader, who coined that phrase for me), throw more on the page, reread, refine, step back and say “OK, that’s good” (for now). I actually think this is how I approach many things in life which has its pros and cons! Hope you are enjoying the snow day!

  6. What a neat connection to your grandfather! Also, I can’t believe you have kept a plant alive since 2002! That’s about 15 years longer than I usually manage. I had a spider plant once that moved from school to school with me for 5 years, but I left it behind once and haven’t replaced it. Maybe it’s time!

  7. I love that you share your actual journal entries with us—gorgeousness, both in words and pictures. I admire your work, especially as I’m very drawn to art-journaling, but my perfectionism often stops me. I am inspired to try yet again, so thank you!
