I walked into Kim’s room. C looked at me, I nodded. He closed his folder got up and walked towards S. I followed him. S looked up at us both, closed her folder and we headed towards the door. “Mrs. Sherriff!” Kim whispered. I turned to her, “Snacks!” “C, S grab you book bags and your snacks.”
I watched as S reached deep in her cubby, beyond bags filled with snow gear, lunchboxes, winter coats to retrieve her book bag and snack. The book bag appeared. She went back in and with a few grunts she came out with her snack. She paused, looking at the snack bag, “I hope it’s a good one.” I heard her say as she peeked into her bag. Sensing my proximity, she looked up at me with a grin, “My favorite, graham crackers.”
There’s only so many hours in a day and sometimes, my scheduled time with kids coincides with snack time. Classroom teachers and I often work together to find the best times to pull kids. Sometimes, we do use a snack time but rest assured, snack is eaten and there’s always time for some elementary chit chat before we get to work.
S, Cand I spent the first five minutes of our time together just chatting. Well, I was chatting, they were chatting and chewing. We had much to discuss as we had a week off for winter break followed by a blizzard that kept us out of school for two more days. C chomped on his goldfish while S savored her graham crackers.
The next 25ish minutes were spent reviewing vowel teams and vowel r. They wrote, they read and they just about finished their snacks. When it was time to clean up, I gave my standard direction to pack up their book bags. They each had a little bit of snack left and asked them if they had enough or if they needed a few more minutes. Easy going C piped up, “Na, na, I’m good.” He picked up his belongings and made his way to the door. S, still lingering at our table had packed up her remaining graham crackers but she made no move towards C. “You can stay and have a few more bites, S. I don’t want you to go back to Mrs. H still hungry.”
Sweet S, nodded her head and reopened her snack. She took a bite, crumbs dotted her lips, and she said softly, glancing up at me, “I just love graham crappers.”
